Spring is an amazing time around Camp!
After a long, hard winter and burning up most of our firewood, warm weather is much appreciated. Making maple syrup is one thing we love doing at Camp every year. Although we didn’t receive as much sap this year, the groups still had fun tapping trees, collecting sap, and being able to eat the Maple Syrup in Chuckwagon. Trips are also something everyone gets excited about in the springtime. Trips vary from hiking or canoeing to bus trips. Each group decides when and where they want to go on a trip. Planning a trip takes a few months. There are things to do to prepare for a trip – getting all their meals together, making an itinerary of when they are leaving and how long they will be gone, writing driving directions on how to get there, and much more.
Now, let’s look into the life of our groups and what’s happening in Campsite.
The Discoverer group is headed to Florida to canoe the Suwannee River. In campsite, they have been rebuilding a retaining wall, which has been a huge project and required many logs to be carried around.
The Woodsmen are heading out on a trip in Georgia and will canoe the Oconee/Altamaha River. They built lots of spirit for this trip and have made some flags and a paddle to take with them. In campsite, they have been building a new railing around their wood corral.
The Pioneers have been busy doing a lot of work in their campsite. They are still trying to get it established since starting the group in the summer of 2025. They are working on building their final sleep tent and trying to finish leveling out wood corral. On top of all that, they are going on a 3-week hiking trip on the Bartram Trial down in the corner of Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina.
The Explorers are not planning a trip right now. In campsite, they are focusing on rebuilding a wood tent and making lots of campsite improvements for the upcoming Families Day.
Some other activities that happened around Camp was a Woodsmenship Festival. We did a buck sawing tournament, a log carry race, a wheelbarrow obstacle course, and finished out with some good food. We also stocked one of our smaller ponds with a bunch of trout. We will have a blast fishing them out when our trout season opens.
It was a cold winter, but we thank God for everything He has done, including giving us Springtime to lift our spirits and allow us to go on new adventures. – Chief Benji Miller, Supervisor
